The Desert

From any of the peaks of the various rock cliffs one could seek shelter from the raging waves of sand that crash relentlessly against the boulders. The winds here are strong enough to influence the movement of the desert sands, and thus the desert seems to roll and course like the ocean itself during the mid-day period when the wind blows its strongest. Mornings serve as the best time to search for food if any were to make their home here, for when the red sands are calm and the wind rests for an evening of exhausting rage, small traces of life emerge from their hiding places among the bluffs that snake through the desert valley. Reptiles, small mammals like mice or rats, and all kinds of insects scamper about in search of food. During the night, another point in a day where the winds are calm, the desert comes to be a little chilly, but despite the sudden cold spike in temperature, it is the only time where travelers and residents can reach the once inaccessible caves within the cliffs. As the winds push the sand against the rocks and build a height high enough to reach the caves' entrances, wolves would need to be hasty about entering to sample the refreshing delights of the small ponds hidden within them. Stalactites hang delicately from the ceilings and cleverly conceal the bizarre cavern life that thrives there. Come morning, the hill of sand that once provided easy access to the caves will have shifted and blown away, leaving a thousand foot drop between you and the desert floor.
